Cable Competition and Lack of Fiber Stand Between Telcos and
the Exploding Business Ethernet Opportunity
The small to medium business (SMB) market worldwide has been neglected in the broadband revolution of the past decade. Only 15% of US businesses and 11% of European businesses have access to fiber, with a much lower percentage for small to medium-sized businesses.  As a result, nearly 98% of SMBs in both the US and Europe still utilize copper-based T1/E1/DSL for their broadband service. However, cable MSOs are trying to change this.  They’ve extended the broadband battleground from the residential market into the SMB market and are quickly making inroads. As the battle intensifies, telecom providers are realizing that with limited CapEx budgets and an average five to seven year payback for fiber, they can't afford to rely on laying fiber alone to fight this battle.

Aktino Bonded Copper Helps Deliver Up to 100 Mbps Quickly, Profitably and Network-wide
Many telecom service providers are looking to Aktino’s Carrier Ethernet over bonded copper solution as an ideal solution to meet this challenge for three key reasons:  it requires minimal CapEx, can be deployed quickly and provides up to 100 Mbps out to 12 Kft/3.7 Km with fiber-like reliability. As a result, many providers are using it as a complement to fiber and in many cases are relying on the profits they generate with it to help pay for their fiber build-outs.

Aktino Symmetric and Asymmetric Ethernet Services

MSOs Are Finding Success Selling Asymmetric Business Services,
With Aktino’s Help Telcos Can Too
One reason for MSO’s success in both the residential and business markets is because they can provide asymmetric services (up to 150 Mbps downstream and 20 Mbps upstream) using their existing infrastructure.  With asymmetric services, they’ve identified an entree into the business services market and have been able to ensure profitability by keeping their costs down. As telco providers witness the successes of MSOs with SMBs using asymmetric broadband services and acknowledge that the true nature of business services are in fact asymmetric, they too are looking to roll out their own version of asymmetric services.  Since Aktino has the only bonded copper solution with Asymmetric Bandwidth capability, many providers are turning to Aktino to make this new service opportunity a reality.
