Aktino AND TROPOS NETWORKS OFFER JOINT SOLUTION FOR POWERING WI-FI SERVICES, BACKHAULING TRAFFIC

Service Providers Can Deploy Networks Quickly, Run Them Efficiently

IRVINE and SUNNYVALE, California, October 22, 2007 – Offering an efficient solution for deploying Wi-Fi networks and carrying their traffic, market leaders Aktino and Tropos® Networks today announced they are working together to provide a complete solution for network providers.

Aktino is the leader in delivery of business-class broadband over existing copper wiring infrastructure, and Tropos Networks, with more than 500 customer networks deployed worldwide, is the market leader in delivering metro-scale Wi-Fi mesh network systems. By working together, the two companies can offer service providers an unrivaled solution - the routers and management software for citywide Wi-Fi deployments, more than enough backhaul bandwidth to comfortably transport the aggregated Wi-Fi traffic, as well as a practical way to power that equipment over the same copper telephone lines used to handle the backhaul of the network traffic.

Aktino and Tropos Networks tested their equipment extensively for interoperability before implementing their agreement and the results were impressive. In the tests, the Tropos 5320DC router, with its MetroMesh™ architecture, and the Aktino AK5000 point-to-multipoint Ethernet platform were linked. The test used eight copper pairs at a range of 12,000 feet, with DC power drawn from the Aktino modems.

The Tropos Networks MetroMesh architecture enables carriers, municipalities, and public safety agencies to deliver city-wide fixed and mobile multi-megabit connectivity for IP-based voice, video, and data applications. In a typical installation, the Aktino equipment would carry the traffic from each Tropos Network router over existing copper pairs, backhauling that traffic to the nearest carrier central office.

“With this pairing of technologies, available in a single solution package, network providers can roll out a Wi-Fi network very rapidly,” said Rob Pilgrim, Director of Business Development of Tropos Networks. “Aktino’s multi-pair bonding technology is an outstanding backhaul option for carriers transporting MetroMesh data traffic over their existing copper infrastructure, and we are excited to have them in our Tropos MetroMesh Solution Partner program.”

“Aktino is the only multi-pair bonding solution provider that can provide power and data over the same copper pairs, and this makes for a compelling network solution for providing municipal Wi-Fi services,” said Bruce Kimble, CEO of Aktino. “When you couple that capability with the fact we can reliably deliver the highest bandwidth, over the greatest range, using the fewest copper pairs, the result is an unparalleled solution for service providers.”

Aktino’s products are based on MIMO (Multiple In, Multiple Out) on DMT (Discrete Multi-Tone) technology, a technology derived from wireless mesh networks. Because it minimizes crosstalk among copper pairs, carriers can use those pairs to achieve longer reach, greater bandwidth, and a much larger service footprint. In addition to the AK5000, Aktino’s product line includes the AK3000 solution for long-reach DS3 (45 Mbps) services (the only viable DS3 over copper solution on the market), and the AK4000, which delivers 10 to 50 Mbps business-class carrier Ethernet services.

About Aktino

Aktino designs and delivers innovative carrier-class long reach broadband over copper solutions that enable service providers to offer a broad footprint of revenue-generating business-class broadband services over existing copper loops. Aktino is a pioneer in the use of industry standard DMT (Discrete Multi Tone) with MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) in the wireline domain. Aktino’s products, including its MEF 9- and MEF 14-certified AK4000 family, the AK5000, the most cost-effective, scalable Carrier Ethernet bonded copper product on the market, and the ATM/TDM-based AK3000 family (the premier DS3 over copper solution on the market) enable service providers to deliver more services to a larger footprint than any other copper-based broadband solution. Founded in 2003 and headquartered in Irvine, California, Aktino is shipping products to service providers throughout the world. For more information, please visit www.aktino.com.
