AKTINO BRINGS POWERFUL DSLAM BACKHAUL SOLUTIONS
TO ITS PARTICIPATION IN 'CALIX COMPATIBLE' PROGRAM

Irvine, California, June 20, 2006 - Aktino, the industry leader in delivery of business-class broadband over copper solutions, has been added to the Calix Compatible Solutions Assurance Program. Aktino's MIMO on DMT-based solution, a key part of the program, provides five times the bandwidth of legacy T1 IMA-based links on the same embedded copper pairs.

The recently expanded program, under the direction of access solutions provider Calix, is designed to help service providers accelerate the delivery of advanced information, communication, and entertainment services to business and residential consumers. More than 75 service providers are delivering IPTV services, for instance, as a result of the Calix Compatible program.

Aktino's MIMO on DMT-based broadband over copper platform backhauls Ethernet and traditional ATM traffic from non-fiber-accessible remote DSLAMs (DSL access multiplexers) to the telephone company central office. Most telcos in the competitive residential broadband market are looking for major increases in capacity in response to increasing customer numbers and bandwidth demands. For locations where fiber is not available, Aktino's approach delivers far more bandwidth than IMA (inverse multiplexing over ATM) links and creates a more robust high-bandwidth service footprint for carriers.

According to the industry research firm Millennium Marketing, there are some 120,000 copper-fed remote cabinets, both digital loop carriers (DLCs) and DSLAMs, in North America that could benefit from a bandwidth upgrade as consumer demands incre

"Telcos badly need to find a way to upgrade their existing digital loop carriers to broadband capabilities," said Kermit Ross, principal of Millennium Marketing. "Most of the DLCs they have are already fed by copper, and it is economically impractical to reach them with fiber. They also need to establish many more DSLAM nodes in their networks, and these too will be more economically reachable with copper. A solution that can upgrade the DLC installed base and help telcos deploy broadband network nodes more quickly is certain to be a winner."

Demonstrating the potential of Aktino's equipment was a recent installation at TelAlaska, an Alaskan telephone company. There, the Aktino AK4000 is providing 10 Mbps of symmetric Ethernet bandwidth over a long (19,800 feet) link between a central office and DSLAM, using six pairs of 24-gauge copper. This reach of more than three and a half miles was accomplished without repeaters.

Aktino's AK4000, an Ethernet in the First Mile (EFM) solution, is the industry's first cost-effective and operationally feasible business broadband solution that bridges the service gap between high-bandwidth, high-margin Ethernet over fiber services and low-bandwidth DS1 or Ethernet over DS1 HDSL-based solutions. Aktino's AK3000 DS3 product performs the same function for traditional ATM-based DSLAMs.

"Aktino's product line is a strong addition to the Calix Compatible program," said Rick Johnston, vice president of business development for Calix. "Both companies benefit by assuring carriers of the interoperability of this powerful copper backhaul solution."

Through rigorous testing, the Calix Compatible program ensures interoperability among the diverse solutions sets required for demanding IP-based services. It helps service providers elect and verify components needed in new service initiatives. Subsequent to initial interoperability and solution verification testing, Calix Compatible continues to benefit service providers by providing a platform on which new services and software releases can be tested.
